NEUROLOGIST

NEUROLOGY

  • Branch of medicine that studies/treats disorders
  • Focuses on disorders in the nervous system
  • 2 divisions in the nervous system~~
  • Central Nervous System (spinal cord and brain)
  • Peripheral System (other elements such as ears, eyes, etc.)

What does a Neurologist do??

  • Specializes in the treatment of disorders that:
  • Affect the brain
  • Affect the spinal cord
  • Affect the nerves

A FEW OF THE DISORDERS TREATED ARE:

  • Cerebrovascular disease (such as stroke)
  • Headache, seizure, spinal cord, & speech & language disorders
  • Movement disorders (such as Parkison's)
  • Demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system
  • Infections of the brain and peripheral nervous system

NEUROLOGISTS

Education required

  • Four years of pre-medical education in a college or university
  • Four years of medical school (resulting in an M.D. or D.O. degree)
  • One year internship in either internal medicine or medicine/surgery
  • At least 3 years of specialty training in an accredited neurology residency program
  • May also have additional training or "interest" in a specified area of neurology

CERTIFICATION & LICENSING

  • Medical Doctors may seek certification from the ABPN
  • Certification by the American Board of Osteopathic and Psychiatrics (requires a higher degree)

SALARY

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Indoors in well lighted exam rooms and hospitals
  • Hours of work exceeded 60 hrs a week frequently
  • Being awakened at all hour of the night
  • Coming in at irregular times to evaluate a patient

DUTIES

  • Examination of the patient to determine whether or not neurological disorders are found
  • After the exam, neurologist order diagnostic tests to determine the type of disorder.
  • Develop treatment plans and consult with surgeons on the procedures and treatment.
  • Neurologists direct nurses and technicians in the treatment of patients.
  • They research over multiple things & they continue to go to school to get an education

  • The idea of people exploring the brain fascinated me.
  • When we learned about Dr. Carson he became my inspiration to do something greater in life.
  • The brain is the most important part of the body and treating it would be an honor.
