Circe tells Odysseus that him and his crew can leave at the end of the day, and explains to him exactly what he needs to do to get home. First he will come to the island of the sirens, he is to have all his crew wear ear plugs so they don't hear the sirens music. After they pass the sirens island they come to two rocks. One is home to scylla, a six headed beast. The other has a great whirlpool at the bottom that sucks everything into it. Once they pass the rocks, they will come to the island of the sun god. Odysseus tells his men to not, under any circumstances, touch the cows because they belong to the sun god.
After about a month the winds did not die down enough for them to take sail and they were running out of provisions so they were forced to eat the sun gods sheep. The winds died down and they took sail but then the sun god got revenge on his men for eating his sheep by Zeus throwing a lightning bolt at the ship, destroying it leaving Odysseus the only survivor.
He gets discouraged after a while because so many bad things have happened to him that have prevented him from getting home. He starts to think that maybe he is not meant to come home.
