PRESENTATION OUTLINE
~Christmas is a deeply religious holiday.
~Traditional masa on Christmas Eve is called la Misa de Gello
~The most important night is Christmas Eve
(nochebuena)
~Christmas decoratión includes a nativity scene (pesebre) and a tree (árbol).
~Tables are decorated with fresh flowers (flowes)
~On Christmas Eve at midnight (medianoche) fireworks (fuegos artificiales) are set off. The sky is lit up with fireworks and mata suegras (mother in law killers) which are tiny sticks of dynamite.
~A traditional meal is chicken stew (estofado de pollo) with beef (carne de res) or lamb (cordero), potatoes (patatas) and corn (maíz)
~Families gather to eat after midnight (medianoche) or on Christmas Day.
~Popular treats in Bolivia are turrón (taffy filled wafer cookies) and buñuelos (pastry drizzled with syrup) with hot chocolate (chocolate caliente).
~Presents are exchanged right after midnight (medianoche) masa on Christmas.
~A large basket of goodies called Canáston de fin de Año(end of the year basket) is exchanged between employer and employees.
~Families used to not exchange gifts on Christmas Day, but on Epiphany on Jan 6, Día de Los Reyes (Day of Kings/Wiseman)
~Santa Claus in Bolivia is called papá Noel, San Nicolas Viejito Pascuro and sometimes just Santa Claus, the American way. He's mainly called papá Noel.
