Body boarding is a surfing watersport that originates from an old tradition of riding waves on your belly. It first became popular with Polynesian people who rode “alaia” boards which were generally made from wood on their belly, knees or sometimes even feet. However more recently since the introduction of the modern body board in the early 1970′s it has experienced massive growth as an extreme sport. The sport is hugely popular in America but has also spread into Australia and South America where the emphasis on air maneuvers makes it an incredibly exciting sport to both partake in and watch.
Body boarding is also a great and easy way to have fun in the water whilst on holiday. It can be enjoyed at any age and is a very easy sport to grasp the basics of. Many people generally use the board alone to ride waves into the shoreline but fins can also be added for additional control and drive forward. The fantastic thing about body boarding is that it is a sport you can enjoy all year round as the conditions needed remain stable.
