  • Born March 7, 1945
  • Raised in Brooklyn and Jersey City as a kid
  • Served in Korea for the US army
  • Got his bachelors in journalism at Empire State college

EARLY CAREER

  • He began his career as a reporter with The Star-Ledger in Newark, N.J., in 1970.
  • He became its night city editor in 1973.
  • Left to work at the Daily News in New York

MID CAREER

  • He had worked as a reporter and editor at The Daily News from 1976 until 1985.
  • In 1990, Mr. Herbert was a founding panelist of "Sunday Edition," a weekly discussion program on WCBS-TV
  • 1991-1993 he worked for NBC reporting for the "Today Show" and the "NBC Nightly News"

LATER CAREER

  • Joined The New York Times in 1993
  • Was an Op-Ed Columnist who ran a twice a week column
  • His topics of choice were Politics, Social trends, and urban affairs
  • Gained popularity through his writings about middle-east conflict and 9/11
  • Also wrote about social trends such as NFL scandals and the popularity of Rap
