ATROCITY=REPRISAL:PT.1

  • After the morning,the I.R.A split up to avoid capture.The British were notified that 8 intelligence agents were shot and killed.

ATROCITY=REPRISAL:PT.2

  • The British were also notified of a big football match taking place,later that day.This was the beginning of the reprisal

IRELAND AT THE TIME

  • During 1916-1922 Ireland was induced in guerrilla warfare and poverty.Many auxiliary and Black and Tans were placed all around the country, after the Easter Rising.

GUNS

  • Many guns that were used were the Lewis gun,48.revolver and pump action shotguns.The I.R.A stole many of these guns from British barracks.

The 12 Apostles were a hit squad part of Michael Collins’ group. They carried out hits on British intelligence officers or anyone that could have been a threat to their campaign.

The morning of Bloody Sunday. In the morning Vinny Byrne and his group were rowing down the river Liffey on a boat tasked with assassinating British intelligence officers. Some of them were killed in front of their wives or in their pajamas.

TIMELINE:PT.1

  • At the start of the morning two intel officers were shot.Another attack happened at 38 Upper Mount Street.

TIMELINE PT:2

  • During the afternoon the police and Black and Tans were stationed all around Croke park.

TIMELINE PT:3

  • The British made their way into Croke park and began shooting.14 people were killed.

FACTS

  • Nearly 15,000 people were at the match when the shooting started.
  • The British made a terrible accusation,saying that an I.R.A man shot into the air.

In the morning British intelligence heard of assassinations of British officers. They heard of a big GAA match. They quickly planned to stormCroke park. The first killed was a boy who was watching the match from a tree. The image in the background show the victims of “the murder gang”, that morning.

The Black and Tans are a WW1 veteran group deployed to Ireland on behalf of the crown to implement force.

R.I.C

  • The R.I.C was the police force in Ireland from 1822 to 1922.The R.I.C,Auxiliaries and Black and Tans raided the match in Croke Park and opened fire on the spectators.

The British ambushed a house containing names of members of the I.R.A. The I.R.A members in the house destroyed the evidence which would have made the British excel in defeating the revolution.

BURKE VS HOGAN

  • Dublin vs. Tipperary.Mick Hogan gets asked to mark Dublin’s best player Franke Burke, but wants to switch with bill ryan.

90 SECONDS OF SHOOTING

  • The shooting lasted 90 seconds,leaving dead scattered across the pitch,the stands,the banks and the street outside.The Tipperary team were corralled by the police into a group at the hill 16 end,fearing for their lives before being let go.

The British obviously shot first. They tried to cover it up by saying an I.R.A member shot, but they killed the child in the tree, which caused the Black and Tans and Auxiliary’s to panic which caused Bloody Sunday.

JOSEPH TRAYNOR.

  • ( local connection). Joseph Traynor lived in the castle Next to us in Drimnagh castle. He has an older brother who was three. And his Dad was an agricultural labourer.
  • The castle is a first class house. It has between 10 and 12 rooms. 16 windows in the front.
  • The outhouses included 3 stables, a harness room, a cowhouse, a calf house, a dairy and a piggery.

CENSUS:1911

  • In the 1911 census, the family are living in their own house. It says Bluebell but their place names are interchangeable.

CLASS VISIT.

  • Room 15 visited the House of Joseph Traynor.(a.k.a Drimnagh Castle) on the 26/11/20.
  • Drimnagh Castle is the only castle in Ireland that has a working moat.

DUB VS. TIPP

  • Bloody Sunday.Tipperary vs. Dublin.The match began and British soldiers ran into Croke Park and began to shoot in retaliation. After the officers were killed.

The aftermath of Bloody Sunday. After Bloody Sunday there was a national curfew and if you were out after the curfew you would be shouted at. Many Irish people were unhappy with this and it eventually stopped.
