Black Holes

BY OWEN HALE, DANIA ZELLER, AND ALEX KUCICH

WHAT ARE BLACK HOLES?

  • Black holes are defined as places where gravity is so strong that light can't escape.
  • They are formed after a massive star collapses.
  • They can grow when two black holes collide.
  • Their masses vary greatly.
  • They are not holes.

History

  • They were first predicted by Simon LaPierre in 1796.
  • They were first observed by the Hubble Telescope in 1994.
  • Albert Einstein's Theory of Relativity helped to explain the immense gravity of black holes.
  • Carl Schwarschild determined a method of finding the size of black holes.
