Black Holes

A BLACK HOLE IS

A PART OF SPACE HAVING A GRAVITATIONAL FIELD SO INTENSE THAT NO MATTER CAN ESCAPE IT

3 TYPES OF BLACK HOLES

THE CLOSEST BLACK HOLE TO EARTH IS THE V616 MONOCEROTIS

AND IS 1,600 LIGHT YEARS AWAY. IT’S MASS IS 13 X THE SUN

HOW DOES A BLACK HOLE FORM?

  • A massive star collapses
  • The star explodes (causing a supernova)
  • The star is blasted into space

BLACK HOLES HAVE A GRAVITATIONAL FIELD

so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape

This is because a black hole is like a star ten times more massive than the Sun, squeezed into a sphere approximately the diameter of New York City

BY THE NUMBERS

BLACK HOLES TO INFINITY

  • Any small patch of the sky shows many distant galaxies
  • Each probably contains a supermassive black hole and millions of stellar black holes
  • There are so many black holes in the universe it is impossible to count them

After a black hole has formed, it can continue to grow by absorbing mass form its surroundings. (Ex. Meteors, space junk)

As you may imagine, the supermassive black hole is the largest, taking in mass to infinity. The stellar is the 2nd largest and the miniature is the smallest.

SUPERMASSIVE BLACK HOLES ARE FOUND IN THE CENTRE OF ALMOST

ALL CURRENTLY KNOWN MASSIVE GALAXIES, INCLUDING THE MILKY WAY.

INSIDE EVERY BLACK HOLE IS MATERIAL TRAVELLING

HALF THE SPEED OF LIGHT, AND THERE IS AN EVENT HORIZON

An event horizon Is a region in spacetime. Events that happen in it can’t affect the outside world. Falling over the horizon is like going over Niagara Falls in a canoe.

WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU IN A BLACK HOLE:

  • gravity will drag you toward it at the speed of light
  • You will get spaghettified
  • You will be pulled toward the event horizon and fall over it
  • There is no way of escaping the speed of light so you will eventually die

THE OPPOSITE OF A BLACK HOLE IS A WHITE HOLE.

IT CANT’T BE ENTERED FROM THE OUTSIDE, BUT MATTER AND LIGHT CAN ESCAPE FROM IT.

FUN FACTS

  • Black Holes...
  • affect time
  • eventually evaporate
  • can be infinitely big
  • Spin
  • Are noisy
