COMMON BIRDS IN

FAIRFAX COUNTY
In our first grade science curriculum, we study birds. Part of our science unit includes observing the birds around us, so here is a presentation i would show my students about the different birds we have here in a Fairfax County.

CARDINAL

Male cardinals are all red with a black patch around their red bill.
Females are brown in color with some red on wings and tail.
They are 7-9 inches in length.

HOUSE SPARROW

Male house sparrows have a black throat, white cheeks, and a brown back.
Females do not have a black throat and have a lighter brown breast.
They are about 6 inches long.

BLUE JAY

They are blue with white spots on their wings and tail. They have black around their neck.
They are 11-12 inches.

TURKEY VULTURE

The turkey vulture is dark brown with black feathers. It has a red head with no feathers on it. 24 to 32 inches.

ROBIN

The Robin has a dark gray back and a brick red chest. The female is more gray. They are between 9 and 11 inches.

CROW

The Crow is large and completely black. It has a strong bill and strong feet. It is 17 to 21 inches in size.

COMMON STARLING

The common starling is black with a yellow bill. It has a short tail and looks like a triangle when it is flying. In the winter time it is speckled with color. It is 7 to 8 inches.

HOUSE FINCH

The house finch is 5 to 6 inches. The male has red on their chest, face, and above their tail. Females are striped brown.
