PROCEDURE FOR NEWBORNS

  • Four Band Identification System
  • Parents and Newborn are given identification bracelets
  • Bracelet contains name and weight of the child
  • Bracelet is put on wrists and ankles of the baby
  • Some hospitals even use a barcoded system

POLICIES

  • Strict rules imposed to ensure that babies dont get misplaced:
  • Grandma cannot carry Baby Jess from the nursery to the Mom
  • Father cuts off his band at home, cannot touch the child
  • Bands are checked when nurses change shifts
  • Bands checked when parents handle baby

PROS & CONS: THE FOUR- BAND SYSTEM

  • Helps to prevent abduction
  • Doctors can tell info quickly from banding
  • Baby's lose weight, bands slip off
  • Bands come off hands easily

Safe- Guard Baby Securities : What We're about (Goals/ Objectives)
Ensuring babies go home with their correct families, and also potentially preventing abduction from facilities.

Safe- Guard Baby Securities Plan
-When the baby is born, after cleansing, a scanning of the Iris is done on both parents and the child. Afterwards, doctors perform a palm-vein scanning. All sets of data and information are sent to a database. The Database is sorted by family, for instance the "Rogers" would all be on one file.
- The newborns will also be tagged with a unique barcode that contains all information obtained during birth (Weight, length, ect.)

- Scanners will be check pointed at every exit, and whenever the child is moved from the nursery, the barcode will be alarmed. The parents and personnel such as nurses will contain specialized banding that prevents the alarm from sounding for necessary purposes.

To ensure Unity with Correct Family
- When it is time to leave, the child and family will be scanned again and data will be compared to that in the database. Once it is identified that the baby is in fact with the correct parents, the family is permitted to discard all banding and leave.

The Science Behind Our Biometric Techniques
-Iris Scanner
scanners scan around the coloring around the eye. They can be much more accurate than finger prints, the camera takes a picture of the iris and analyzes it into code. It proves very helpful because everyone's iris is different

Why the Method?
Because infants are so small and mature since the minute of birth, we needed a way to obtain biological information. A scientific study conducted by a group of scientists to help limit the amount of hospital abductions in developing Countries such as Brazil found that palm vein scanning produced 0.0% "doodles" or unreadable scans.

The Roger's Success Story
Mrs. Rogers arrived at "We deliver babies" hospital on 42nd street Monday, she had contractions for 10 hours hours and finally gave birth the same day. Lewis Armstrong Rogers was born and immediately after Lewis is cleansed, doctors begin scanning Mr. Rogers, Mrs. Rogers, and Lewis. The Rogers all go into the database and afterwards the Rogers are banded and Lewis is taken to the nursery. For about 3 days Lewis is taken care of only by nurses with an authorizing band.

Whenever Lewis needs to see his parents, only the authorizing nurse transports him to his parents and their bands are scanned to check if barcodes on bands correspond. When it is time for the Rogers to leave, they discard bands by giving it to the nurse AFTER all scans are completed again to check if the correct baby is being placed with them.

Potential Limitations on our Program
- Scannings are very hard to protect, can either go public or fall into wrong hands
- Databases can be hacked, reliance on computers
- Funding may be short for hospitals, our system is not cheap (approximately $300,000)
* IN addition, scanning is a matter of privacy. With scans the government can get a hold of exact location, daily activities, ect.

"Beating the System"
- Top notch hacking
- Switching banding
- Disabling scanner, or even destruction of scanners
