TUNDRA-Alaska

  • Extremely Cold
  • Short season for growth and reproduction (50-60 Days) = small plants
  • Desert like (except for the snow)
  • Located in the Northern Hemisphere
  • Permafrost- Permanent frost on the subsoil.
  • About 1,700 different kinds of plants
  • Animals adapted for the long winters
  • Very little precipitation- less than 10 inches per year

Tundra

I picked this because it is in Alaska.

TAIGA-North America

  • Short wet summers/long cold winters
  • aka- coniferous forests
  • not a lot of vegetation
  • Fires are very common - get rid of old or sick trees
  • Very cold winter weather (-60º)
  • Growing season is about 3 months long
  • Taiga forests are endangered because of logging
  • Lots of bugs - not a lot of animals
  • Very extreme temperature changes

Taiga Forest

I picked this because it is a forest that I found in a Taiga region

Temperate Forest- NE Asia

  • temperature ranges from -30º to 30º
  • Precipitation 70-150 cm per year
  • Fertile soil - covered with a decaying layer
  • 140-200 days of growing season
  • conifer and deciduous trees
  • Small animals, Mountain lions, bob cats, black bears, wolves, and foxes live here

I picked this because you can see the different trees

  • Dominated by Shrubs
  • Fires happen often
  • Scrubland can be man-made or natural
  • It can be mature vegetation or a forest destroyed a fire
  • There are desert, Mediterranean, and Interior shrublands
  • Scrubland species are adapted to fire

I picked this because of all the shrubs

Tropical Rain Forest

  • Temp varies 20ºC-25ºC throughout the year
  • Lots of layers allowing very little light to the forest floor
  • The soil is nutrient-poor and acidic
  • Lots of different kinds of trees and plants
  • Lots of different kinds of animals too
  • Annual rainfall is more than 2000 mm

I picked this because it is a forest and it has clouds and is humid.

  • Grassland with a few scattered trees
  • Found in warm / hot climates
  • Rainfall is about 50 to 130 cm per year
  • Has a dry and rainy season
  • Fires often occur here

  • I picked this picture because I didn't know where else to find a savannah and I thought that this represented a savannah well.

Desert

  • Dry / Arid
  • Little rain - less than 50 cm per year
  • very hot
  • very few large mammals
  • have specialized vegetation
  • lots of small animals

I picked this because it is death valley. a very hot dry place
