THE GREAT BARRIER REEF

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

The Great Barrier Reef is an example of the biome the coral reef because it contains all of the same features that a coral reef needs.

SYDNEY
In Sydney the Local food is lamb, vegemite, fish'n'chips. The population of Sydney is 4.5 million and they all use the Australlian Dollar money system. Local jobs include many of the same jobs the U.S. has, from a farmer to an anesthesiologist

WEATHER

WHAT WEATHER IS COMMON?

Untitled Slide

WEATHER AND CLIMATE
Tropic climate, average summer temperature: 24-33 degrees celsius. The average winter temperature: 14-26 degrees celsius Warmer conditions bring threats of high sea temperatures which causes coral bleaching. Cyclonic winds and flood waters can have a severe impact on coral reef ecosystems This causes stress to the Great Barrier Reef.

BOTANY

WHAT PLANTS ARE FOUND IN THIS BIOME?

PLANT LIFE

They make sure to pick an area that provides sunlight, oxygen, and nutrients to survive in their environment

RED ALGAE

THEY BUILD A THIN MAT OVER SOME PARTS OF THE REEF TO PROTECT IT.

SEAGRASS

PROVIDES AN HABITAT FOR SMALLER FISH

CORAL

PROVIDES A BUFFER AND PROTECTS OUR COASTS FROM WAVES, STORMS, AND FLOODS

KELP

INFLUENCES COASTAL OCEANOGRAPHIC PATTERNS

ANIMAL LIFE

WHAT KIND OF ANIMALS ARE IN THIS BIOME?

There are many different animal species around the coral reef. Some are fish, sessile animals, whales, and birds.

Fish- have a body structure that is adapted to the waters of the Coral reef. It's easy to maneuver through the coral. Out in the open fish adapt to swim faster, but when in the coral they become flat like to get through the tight places

Whales- the award minke whale is the native whale to the area in June and July is when they visit the coral reef. The baleen whale is another native whale to the area. There name means that they feed by straining the tiny plankton and krill.

Birds- the white-breasted sea eagles are the animals that live on the coast and islands. To find there food they find it hard to catch their prey from the water, so they fish by snatching their prey from the waters surface.

CLOWNFISH BIOGRAPHY

FACTS ABOUT THE CLOWN ANEMONEFISH

  • When they travel its called a school
  • Average size is 4.3 inches
  • They're carnivores
  • Average life is 6 to 10 years
  • 28 known species of anemonefish

CURRENT CONFLICT

WHAT PROBLEMS ARE HAPPENING NOW?

CORAL BLEACHING
As the climate changes and gets hotter coral bleaching is supposed to become more frequent and severe. The sea temperature increases and coral stress from other impacts may increase corals vulnerability to bleaching.
