Cri-du-chat syndrome

  • Cri-du-chat syndrome is missing chromosome 5
  • It is also known as the cat-cry syndrome
  • Is a chromosomal condition

THE CAUSE OF THE CONDITION

  • There is a break in chromosome 5
  • Generally occurs while the sperm or egg cell is developing
  • 80% of cases come from the fathers sperms
  • If they are a carrier at least one of their kids will be a carrier
  • It doesn't skip a generation

COMMON SYMPTOMS

  • When they are a baby they have a high pitch cry
  • They call it the cat cry syndrome
  • They have a small head size, low birth weight, intellectual disability and delayed development
  • weak muscle tone (hypotonia) in infancy

IS THERE A SPECIFIC GROUP THAT IS COMMONLY AFFECTED

  • 80% of people get it from their father
  • It can happen to any family and any race
  • It is a break in chromosome 5
  • They will have the same affects as anyone else would if they had it

ARE THERE ANY CURES OR TREATMENTS FOR THE DISEASE

  • There are no cures for this disease
  • They offer therapy to those who have it
  • Therapy will help them speak & function like everyone else
  • They will live to be as old as the average person would live

INCLUDE ANY OTHER PERTINENT INFORMATION

  • Jerome Lejeune discovered this syndrome in 1963
  • It is French for cry of the cat
