ANGIOSPERMS AND GYMNOSPERMS

BY : RAEGAN PRICE

ANGIOSPERMS

  • ovules are enclosed within a carpel
  • Double fertilization
  • With stamens with two pairs of pollen sacs
  • phloem tissue composed of sieve tubes and companion cells
  • Flowering plant are one of the major groups of extant seed plants

EXAMPLES OF ANGIOSPERM

  • Roses
  • Tomatoes
  • Tulips
  • Magnolia trees
  • Cucumber

ANGIOSPERM REPRODUCTION

  • Some reproduce asexually and sexually
  • In plant, asexual reproduction is also known as vegetative reproduction
  • Sexual reproduction generate genetic variation makes evolutionary adaptation possible
  • Can reproduce by pollination
  • May also reproduce by seeds

GYMNOSPERM

  • Also known as "naked seed plant"
  • double fertilization does not take place
  • Female cones are bigger & higher up that male cones
  • "gymnosperm" comes from the Greek word gymnospermos

EXAMPLES OF GYNOSPERM

  • Redwood
  • Conifer
  • Fir
  • Spruce
  • Pine

REPRODUCTION OF A GYMNOSPERM

  • ovaries are absent in gymnosperms
  • double fertilization does not take place
  • 1 of 2 sperm cells released by the generative cell fuses the egg
  • Female cones are bigger & higher up that male cones
