BIO ENERGY

Algae

ALGAE

  • Over 30,000 species of algae
  • It's not a plant or animal
  • Could convert energy of the sun into biomass

WHAT ALGAE DOES

  • Uses energy from the sun to pull carbon dioxide from the air
  • Converts carbon dioxide into fats and sugars
  • Exhales oxygen
  • Uses sugars and fats to reproduce

Extra energy is stored as oily fat, which can be turned into biodiesel

Unlike fossil fuels, algae is carbon neutral

CHALLENGES

  • Needs a lot of space to grow
  • Most space available is in the country, but most carbon dioxide is in the city
  • Factories need energy for lights to grow it

AND IT IS EXPENSIVE

$8 per gallon

Today, Biodiesel from algae is experimental in cars, airplanes, and anything that runs on gas

In the future, anything that runs on gas could be running on algae oil.
