WHAT IS ALCOHOL?

  • Alcohol is a depressant, it slows down the messages from your brain to you body parts. It also stops your ability to make sensible decisions, therefore putting yourself and others at risk.

WHAT IS BINGE DRINKING?

  • Binge drinking is the excessive consumption of alcohol in a certain time space. For women it takes four drinks in the time space of two hours and for men it takes six.

WHY BINGE DRINK?

  • There are many reasons for people to binge drink, sometimes it's not intentional. Some reasons are, forgetting about broken friendships, sometimes it's even for fun, to have a good time. People also binge drink, to fit in with their friends even if they don't want to, to relieve stress and to socialize.

  • In Australia, binge drinking causes more deaths than every other drug combined.
  • 1 in 6 drinkers in Australia, have more than 11 drinks in one sitting.
  • In 2012, there were almost 154,000 cases were people were hospitalised after binge drinking.

NICOLE BICKNELL CASE

  • Nicole Bicknell died after consuming more than 18 drinks on her 18th birthday. Perth teen wanted to drink 18 shots to mark birthday. A WA coroner has recommended following the case of a Perth teenager who drank herself to death at her 18th birthday party.Nicole Bicknell wanted to have a drink for every year of her life. It has been told that over about 7 hours she is estimated to have had about 20 alcoholic drinks, including vodka mixers, liqueur and at the end of the night, and a high-strength liquor. (Perth Now)

BINGE DRINKING A HARD HABBIT TO BREAK

  • Australians who binge drink as teenagers continue to drink at severe levels in adulthood, a study has found, more than 90 per cent of men who drink alcohol to excess as teens keep doing so throughout their 20s.The research, published in the British Medical Journal Open, is based on a study of nearly 2000 Victorian teenagers aged between 14 to 17. They were followed and assessed nine times over 15 years, starting in 1992.As teenagers, 52 per cent of boys and 34 per cent of girls reported drinking five or more drinks on a single occasion within the past week. DANGERS OF BINGE DRINKING

  • These cases prove that in Australia binge drinking is a massive problem. It also proves that binge drinking doesn't just make you sick, it can cost you your life. This was the sad reality for Nicole Bicknell. It's not just adults that binge drink, teens do as well, that can lead to serious addiction when you get older.

SHORT TERM EFFECTS

  • Short term effects include, having a hangover, nausea, headaches, becoming unsteady, vomiting and memory loss.

  • Long term effects, you can develop an addiction to alcohol, have liver damage, cancer, brain damage and even death.
