Major social influence and a leader, in the temperance movement.

Temperance movement:
Temperance movement of the 19th and early 20th centuries was an organized effort to encourage moderation and the consumption of intoxicating liquors.

He was a baseball player, who quit in 1891 to devote his energies to the young men's Christian association. (YMCA)
