  • Big Horn Sheep have concave elastic hooves which allow them to climb steep desert mountians
  • Big Horn Sheep also have excellent eyesight to detect deadly animals.
  • Big Horn Sheep also have horns which they use to break open cactus and they also use the horns for fighting.

Facts about Big Horn Sheep's Horns

  • Both male and females soon grow horns after birth. Older Big Horn Sheep's horn sometimes have horns over three feet long. Adult Big Horn Sheep's horns sometimes weigh over 30 pounds. Ewe's horns are shorter and usually don't bend.

Big Horn Sheep's diet

  • Big Horn Sheep's diet mainly consists of grass. If grass is unavailable, they eat sedges, forbs, or cacti.

Big Horn Sheep's uniqueness

  • Southern Big Horn Sheep have the ability to survive without water for weeks, sometimes months.
  • After drinking water, they could quickly replenish themselves and become fully recovered again.

Big Horn Sheep's Battles and their Breeding Times

  • When Big Horn Sheep fight, which determines the dominant animal, they ram each other with their horns and that also determines who gains possession of the ewes.
  • Big Horn Sheep breed during breeding season, typically July through October. The process takes about 150-180 days then, the lambs are born usually in late winter.
