Beyond Tier 1

Published on Nov 18, 2015

Getting creative with other - (READ: Not Twitter & Facebook!) social media platforms.

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Beyond Tier 1

THINKING OUTSIDE TWITTER AND FACEBOOK

TIER 1: Facebook & Twitter

This is different for every organization - but this is the format for most!

This is how an organization prioritizes where they share resources, attention and content.

TIER 2: Pinterest, Google+ & Instagram

TIER 3: YouTube, Tumblr & Snapchat

This is not a presentation about growing your audience. This is about using social platforms creatively.

1. Use its purpose to make a point about sexuality, women, gender equality, etc

The project was created in collaboration with The Immigration Council of Ireland to raise awareness of the fact that, at any given time, 2.4 million people around the world are victims of human trafficking. Users swipe through a series of images of a woman as she becomes progressively more bruised. Afterwards, messages will appear such as “Your options are left or right. Women forced into prostitution in Ireland have none.”

To begin, Tinder users were encouraged to change their profile picture to the Amnesty International logo. The company was also prioritized by Tinder, meaning their promotion would show up on more users’ screens. Once logged in, people were shown images like this one:

Afterwards, they had the option to go to an interactive website with more info and the option to sign up for a mailing list.

2. Take advantage of the technology's functionality

Doggy matching is not entirely new. BarkBuddy is like Tinder for people to find dogs that need rescuing. Doggy BNB, an Airbnb for pets, helps dog owners find care for their animals.
Facebook allows pet profiles, which is how the BBH interns were able to connect them on Tinder, where you need an account with the social network.
Mood said that they posted 10 dogs and got 2,700 matches in less than a week. On Tinder, users swipe right on pictures of people—or dogs—they like. If both people swiped right, then they match and can text each other in the app.

SOME final Advice

And probably the most important

1. Don't be afraid to be the first to "crack" a new platform.

The internet values unique applications of new platforms. Experiment!

2. Give something trendy a try (even though everyone else is doing it).

Just because another organization has done it doesn't mean you shouldn't.

3. Make sure the platform you engage on isn't out of date (or style!)!

R.I.P.

4. Don't start on a new social platform without a plan (can be long term or short term!)

Keep it going? Or put it in the campaign morgue?

HOW TO STAY HIP WITH THE TIMES?

  • Read Buzzfeed!
  • Watch how other people (friends, your friends' kids, your own kids) use social!
  • Try out new platforms!

THANK YOU!

@Questions?

BREAKOUT

Your organization, Generation X Votes, wants to create a social media campaign to gather photos and stories from attendees at National Voter Day concerts around the country.

1. What social media platform (not Facebook or Twitter) would you ask people to use?

2. How would you get attendees to take the action?

3. How would your organization use the content online?

And here's my "takeaway" for the participants to reflect on:
Think of an upcoming or recent campaign your organization has run. How would you bolster campaign engagement using a Tier 2 or 3 social media platform?
