Lula Elizabeth was only a teenager when he was born.The dad left early before they grew
poor.When Alvin was five his 22 year old mother was raped by a group of white men,leaving him afraid of whites.

-Inspiration to dance
Drew inspiration from the black church music he heard at the local dance hall.In Los Angles,Ailey proved to be a gifted student in many ways.He studied modern dance with Lester Horton in 1949 and joined Hortons dance company the following year.

Early years- In the fall of 1942,Ailey's mom,in common with many African Americans,migrated to Los Angeles,California were she heard of lucrative work supporting the war effort.Ailey age 11, joined his mother later by train,having stead behind in Texas to finish out the school year.

Ailey died on December,1 1985 at the age of 58.To spare his mother the social stigma of his death from AIDS,he asked his doctor to announce that he had died of terminal blood by Scalia.
