Beriberi

  • There are two types of this condition
  • Wet beriberi affects the cardivascular system and causes symptoms such as shortness of breath, increased heart rate, and swelling of legs
  • Dry beriberi affects the nervous system and causes symptoms such as difficultly walking, numbness in hands and feet, confusion, pain, and vomiting.

Causes

  • One may develop beriberi when they do not consume enough Vitamin B1 otherwise known as thiamine.
  • Individuals can also become sick with this disease if they abuse alcohol. Alcohol limits the absorbtion of thiamine.
  • Another way of extracting this disease is through inheritance from family or from a breastfeeding mother.

Treatment

  • To overcome the symptoms of this disease, one may take Thiamine supplements by shot or through a pill.
  • If left untreated this may cause death.
