PRESENTATION OUTLINE

1. affliction - (n) - a force that oppresses or causes suffering

The Danes endured the affliction caused by Grendel's attacks.

2. gorge - (v) - to stuff with food

Nightly, Grendel attacked Herot and gorged on villagers.

3. infamous (adj) - having a very bad reputation

Beowulf heard of the infamous Grendel and offered to help the Danes.

4. lair (n) - den of a wild animal
Beowulf confronted Grendel's mother
in her lair.

5. livid (adj) - discolored from being bruised

Beowulf stood livid, as a hero after battle.

6. loathsome (adj) - disgusting

Beowulf boasted that he and his men would defeat the loathsome Grendel.

7. purge (v) - to cleanse or rid of something undesirable

Beowulf returned home to Sweden after purging Denmark of Grendel and his mother.

8. scruples (n) - feelings of doubt about a course of action

An older Beowulf showed no scruples when choosing to return to Denmark to face the dragon.

9. solace (n) - comfort or consolation in a time of distress or sadness


Beowulf offered solace to the helpless Danes.

10. talon (n) - claw

The dragon
easily grasped Beowulf with his large talons.
