UN development index

(hdi)

The UN HDI is a comparative measure of life expectancy, literacy, education and poverty. The anual HDI rankings generate a great deal of attention in Canada, with most, if not all, of the major networks picking up the story and broadcasting it to their viewers.

Many Canadians take a great deal of pride or disappointment in how Canada places in these rankings, but few take the time to understand the criteria that the UN uses to arrive at these rankings.

Where Canada scores well, it usually indicates things the government is paying attention to, and where Canada scores low is where the government may possibly be negligent in performing its duties.
