Beds have advanced throughout the years. On this presentation I will teach you the history of the bed. Things you didn't kmow about the bed how changed and how it affected mankind.
Near the caveman era a bed would just be a place one could sleep. Then after thousands of years humans decided that they would stay in one place and sleep in that place. Beds during that time would just be the ground covered in grass or leaves or sometimes animal skin. Millions of years later the bed changed into a straw filled bag then it evolved from plain straw to a refined pellet or ticking sack filled with soft objects such as grass, straws, leaves, grain, shuck, wool, cotton, animal hair, feathers or even down which would be woven out of cotton. Near 3600 bce the nomadic people made the first waterbed it was made out of goat skin and they cleverly thought to leave it outside and during the night put it back into the house so people who had waterbeds would sleep comfortably and warmly.
Did you know that until 3100 bce all beds would be on the ground. Around 3100 bce the first raised bed was invented it was raised on wooden platforms. The raised bed was really helpful because people wouldn't be easy game for animals such as snakes. Then around the 13th and 14th century bed curtains would be used. They were used mainly to protect people from bugs and drafts. They would also provide privacy and keep people warmer. Then thousands of years later around the 17&18th century in the country of holland beds were being built permanently into the house and if there was a big family of people their beds would be stacked on top of each other in a bunk bed sort of fashion . This tradition was taken to America but it didn't catch on so it died out.
By the 1700's iron frames and cotton filled mattresses were made. They helped humans by making it a less inhabitable for micro organisms and insects that would give people diseases. So during that time when people would say "sleep tight and don't let the bed bugs bite" they literally meant it. By the 1800's metal springs were attached to the insides of bed frames in order to make it sturdier and it also gave the mattress a slightly bouncy feeling. Then after the end of the civil war the first foldable bed was made by a woman named Sarah E Goode. She was the first African-American woman to get a patent.
Beds they make me think about how near the beginning a bed would just be the ground. That made me slightly sad because the people back then don't get to experience the soft support of beds now. The knowledge I have gained from doing this research makes me want to tell my bed how much I like it for the hard times and the good times it's been through with me. It also makes me feel good for living in this time period where as the years pass more advancements in technology are being made. I hope that all of you appreciate your bed more than ever before because think about how your life would be if your bed was nothing more than ground.
