BEARS

VERTEBRATES

  • Being a vertebrate means having a backbone and skeleton. Vertebrates are animals that have back bones, vertebrate animals also include humans.

MAMMALS

  • A mammal is a warm blooded vertebrate, that has hair/fur. Female mammals usually have live birth and produce milk for their young to drink.

CARNIVORA

  • Animals that eat meat, they have sharp teeth used for stabbing, tearing and eating flesh.

CANIFORMIA

  • These mammals are part of Carnivora. These mammals usually have a long snout and non retractible claws.

BEARS

  • Are mammals of the ursidae family. Seals/Pinnipeds are their closest living relatives. Bears have large bodies with stubby legs, long snouts, shaggy fur/hair and paws with non retractable claws. Bears also have an excellent sense of smell.

POLAR BEARS

  • Lifespan- 15-18 years. 30 in captivity.
  • Protection status- vulnerable.
  • Population- 20-25 thousand.
  • Primarily found in Alaska and Canada
  • Polar bears are white and have a longer neck than most bear species.
  • Polar bears are mostly carnivorous, the feed off of seals.
  • Preferred habitat of a polar bear is continental ice shelves.
  • Polar bears aren't territorial.
  • Polar bears are endothermic.

SLOTH BEAR

  • Life span- up to 40 years in captivity.
  • Protection status- threatened.
  • 7-10 thousand.
  • They live in the forests of India.
  • They have a shaggy black coat and usually have a cream 'x' or 'y' on their chest.
  • Sloth bears are omnivorous and eat termites.
  • Sloth bears are endothermic.
  • Sloth bears wander alone at night, usually in search of insects or new fruit.
