There has been two battles of Saratoga that had been turning point for the american revolution. On sept. 19, British General John Burgoyne had a small and costly victory over the american forces lead by Horatio Gates and Benedict Arnold. Then attacked another time on Oct. 7, but was a failure and had to retreat. The american victory convinced the French government to join the war. Then the French joined our aid.
It began when John Burgoyne took Fort Ticonderoga. American troops then regrouped at Horatio Gates. General Washington then sent Benedict Arnold, his best infantry commander, and a regiment of riflemen. The british attacked and took over Jittery Gates after suffering many casualties. Then john attacked again on Oct. 7, but Arnold fought by and lead an attack that gained many key strong points. The british retreated to Saratoga. American forces surrounded the town and John Burgoyne and his army surrendered.
The reason why I chose this event is because of the historical places and the strategic attacks. Also with all the weapons they used and the clothes they wore. Even watching the General take command over the battlefield and making decision that will either will win or lose against the enemy. Seeing the battling take place right in front of you would be thrilling and exciting. And seeing the soldiers cheer in joy as they won the battle they fought so hard for.
The reason for why this event is significant is because this has been the most important turning point in the war. We have regained some major key strongholds back for the British. Also we showed that we wanted our freedom and independence that we will fight hard for.
Even the French seen how we wanted freedom from Britain and so came to help us get it. They helped us to gain the freedom we wanted by fighting the British beside us. So, this are the reasons why this event is so significant in american history.
