IN THE BEGINNING... Problems and controversies began on the border between the Greek city-states and Persia. With the rumors of a Persian attack the Greek army outnumbered, the people of Athens sent Pheidippides a good runner to the land of Sparta to ask for backup.
Sparta's Response... Due to religious rituals the strongest army in Greece declined the offer to fight against the Persians. The Athenians, would have to fight this battle without the Spartan army's help.
Outnumbered... After the answer from the Sparta many people doubted that Greece could defeat the Persian army, for they were outnumbered 10,000 to 20,000.
The Battle... It was in 490 B.C that the Battle of Marathon commenced, the Athenians with the help of the Plataens attacked the Persians going downhill. At the end of the day it was decided that the Greeks had won the battle, but the war between Greece and Persia was far from over
Marathon... After the war concluded and the Greeks had officially won the battle, Pheidippides ran about 42.195 kilometers to the city of Athens where he spread the news that they had defeated the Persians. His run from the battle at Marathon to Athens is known as the first Marathon.
