THE ATHENIAN ARMY

  • Led by Callimachus and Miltiades
  • 10,000 Athenians
  • Athenians outnumbered 2:1

HOW THE ATHENIANS WON

  • Joined by small force from Plataea
  • Block two exits from the plain of Marathon
  • Athenians wait five days to attack Persians
  • Callimachus and Miltiades use knowledge of Persian tactics
  • Greek ranks thinned in center and hoplites on flanks

PHIDIPPIDES

  • Ran 140 miles to ask Sparta for help
  • Sparta ended up saying no due to a religious festival
  • Phidippides later runs 26 miles and 385 yards to announce victory to Athens
