LANGUAGE & INFLUENCE

  • The culture of Barbados is a blend of West African and British cultures present in Barbados.
  • English is the official language of the nation, reflecting centuries of British influence

MUSIC

  • Music is an important part of the country's culture.
  • Modern Barbados has produced popular stars of calypso and the indigenous spouge style, and also has a large jazz scene. Reggae, soca, and tuk are popular as well.
  • The music of Barbados is of diverse styles and influences, most notably of British and African origins, that includes folk, western classical, religious and popular music

TRADITIONAL FOOD

  • Cou Cou and flying fish are the national foods of Barbados
  • It is made from corn meal and okras
  • It is served with a tomato based sauce
  • It may also be served with stew, red herring and salt fish
  • Other famous dishes also include - macaroni pies, fish cakes,cutters of all sorts and fish fries

THE HOLETOWN FESTIVAL

  • Typically in Febuary
  • First celebrated in 1977 to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the first English settlement in the Holetown area of Barbados
  • Now years later the Festival starts with reenactments of this historical event

OLSTINS FISH FESTIVAL

  • In March or April
  • Started in 1977
  • Celebrates the importance of fishermen on the island
  • Annual event attracts over 30,000 people
  • Held over Easter weekend in Olstins scenic village in the South coast of Batbedos
  • They sample a range of fish dishes watch crabs and boat racing competitions and more
