A.B 'BANJO' PATERSON

Andrew Barton 'Banjo' Paterson was born on the 17th of February , 1864 in Narrambla, NSW, Australia.

He got his nickname 'Banjo' from his favourite horse.

He was known as 'Barty' to his family.

He was one of the 7 children of the Paterson family.
In 1874 he started going to Sydney Grammar School. He then lived with his grandmother (Emily Mary Barton ) in Gladesville, Sydney.

He died due to a heart attack on the 5th of February 1941 in Sydney.

  • Billy: a tin container with a wire handle for boiling water and making tea.
  • Jumbuck: sheep.
  • Tuckerbag: is a bag used for carrying food. *Tucker is food
  • Matilda: a swag, or a bedroll that is carried like a backpack. Matilda is also slang for something that has been stolen.

GLOSSARY
Thoroughbred: is a breed of horse.

Swagman: is a man who travels around the countryside with his swag , and who survived by doing odd jobs for farmers, or by begging.

GLOSSARY

  • Squatter: in the past, those who settled on land without permission were called squatters; they usually chose the best land available and became very rich.
  • Waltzing Matilda: this can mean either carrying your swag about the countryside, or carrying away a stolen item ( in this song it is a sheep).
