Engineering a desktop organizer

The challenge

  • Using what you know about area and perimeter, build a prototype of a desktop organizer

  • It must hold pencils, rulers, crayons and other school materials.
  • It must meet the following criteria.

Criteria

  • It must be able to sit on top of my desk and still allow room for books and other desktop materials

Criteria

  • It must have a perimeter of between 30 inches and 32 inches
  • The area of the entire organizer must not exceed 50 square inches

  • There must be at least 5 compartments.

It should hold...

  • 12 colored pencils
  • sticky post-it notes
  • 3x5 index cards
  • 5 pencils, 2 glue sticks and 1 highlighter

Criteria continued

  • Additional compartments to hold other supplies can be added
  • The shape of the organizer must be rectangular but individual compartments may be any shape

  • The outside of the organizer must be covered and decorated attractively

  • small boxes of varying shapes
  • cardboard and craft sticks
  • decorative duct tape
  • glue, tape, and tissue paper

Timeline:

  • Ask, imagine, plan, design (today
  • create, test and improve Monday and Tuesday
  • Final presentation at end of class on Tuesday or beginning of class on Wednesday.
