BABYLON

  • Babylon was the capital of Babylonia, which is a small city state of Mesopotamia.
  • Founded at the end of the 3rd millennium BC and lasted through the 2nd century AD.
  • Hammurabi becomes the ruler of Babylon in 1728 BC.
  • Babylon is destroyed in 1531 BC by the Hittites.
  • Babylon is revived and they continue to maintain a stable society for 3 centuries.

  • Nebuchadnezzar took over for 40 years. This period in time was what gave Babylon it's fame.
  • In the bible Nebuchadnezzar is known for being the one to destroy Jerusalem and make off with Jews into their Babylonian captivity.
  • The end of Babylon was in the 3rd century BC.
  • The final famous happening was when Alexander The Great dies in 323 BC, in Babylon.

MODERN DAY MEANING

  • A city or place of great luxury, sensuality, and often vice and corruption. A place of captivity or exile.

  • Few students coming from middle school going to lawndale act as if they go to school in Babylon.
  • People think my family is the best but when they leave it's like living in Babylon.
  • I tried to reassure my parents that I was only going off to a university, not to Babylon, but they seemed to think the two were synonymous.
