ANNE FRANK'S CHILDHOOD

  • Anne Frank was born in June 12, 1929 & died in early March of 1945.
  • She lived most of her life in or near Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
  • Many restrictions had been placed upon the lives of the Dutch Jewish population.
  • Her family moved into a secret hiding place called the secret annex.

THE DIARY

  • Anne Frank wrote in her diary during the period in hiding in the secret annex
  • "Since they were Jewish, my father emigrated to Holland in 1933."
  • On May 10,1940, Germany invaded the Netherlands. Once again, the Frank family was in danger!
  • She wrote her first entry in her diary on June 12, 1942, addressed to her imaginary friend named Kitty.

THE NAZIS

  • Anne Frank has become a symbol of the children that were murdered in the Holocaust.
  • The Nazis took over, which meant Anne could no longer attend school with non-Jews.
  • The Jews were limited to what they could do, now that the Nazis took over.

ADOLF HITLER

  • April 20, 1889 - April 30, 1945 in a town of Austria
  • After legally gaining power in Germany, he put those who disagreed with him in concentration camps.
  • He strengthened Germany by blaming their problems on Communists and Jews.
  • He committed suicide because he didn't want to be captured by the Russians and put on trial.

THE CAPTURING

  • After 25 months of hiding, a secret state police, Gestapo, captured the family on August 4, 1944.
  • In 1944, the Franks were sent to concentration camps; only Anne's father survived.
  • In March 1945, Anne and her sister, Margot Frank, died at Bergen-Belsen.

OTTO FRANK

  • May 12, 1889 - August 19, 1980(age 91)
  • He was a lieutenant in the Germany army during World War 1.
  • He decided to publish Anne's diary to fulfill his daughter's wish.

EDITH FRANK

  • January 16, 1900 - January 6, 1945
  • She spent 3 days imprisoned in Amstelveenweg, before transported to Auschwitz.
  • She was selected for the gas chambers on October 30, 1944, but her and her friend escaped.
  • She died 20 days before Auschwitz was liberated.

HOLOCAUST

  • Began in 1933 when Hitler came to power, and ended in 1945 when the Nazis were defeated.
  • It means "sacrifice by fire" which was sometimes how the Nazis would persecute the Jews.
  • About 11 million people were killed and 6 million of those people were Jewish.

DEATH OF THE FRANKS'

  • Edith Frank died from malnutrition.
  • Otto Frank died from lung cancer.
  • Anne and Margot Frank both died from typhus.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Why had the Franks settled in Holland? - They thought it was more safe from invasion.
  • Were the Franks wealthy? - Yes. The family owned a bank, which explained many of the photographs that only the wealthy could afford at the time.
  • Was their hiding place secret? - Well, their protectors, their protectors' associates, and their vegetable suppliers knew. Their whereabouts were revealed when the tide of option changed.
  • Why did the Frank family never go out? - They were afraid that the Germans would capture them, and they looked "too Jewish" since they didn't obtain false identity paper, like most other Jewish people.
