Did you know...

  • In America, 1 in 91 children are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Most Children are diagnosed by age three
  • Many children with Autism can have difficulties with verbal communication
  • This can cause frustration for both the child and his/her family

Technology has given these children a voice

  • IPADS have changed the lives of so many families
  • Students can use them to voice their thoughts, needs, and feelings.
  • They are differentiated for age level and motor abilities
  • Students can use apps to type and the IPAD will "talk"
  • Students can use APPS with pre-gprogrammed phrases to communicate

  • IPADS relieve some frustration
  • Students have a lot to say and this gives them the means to do so
  • Families can finally hear what their child needs or is thinking
  • They also have apps to practice language

  • Some students are unable to type..
  • An eye gaze board can be used to assist in communication
  • Students look at the board to communicate wants, needs, and feelings
  • This may take practice, but can decrease frustration
  • Again, this is giving the child a voice

  • Video Cameras, movies, video apps
  • Students can practice their speech be recording themselves
  • They can edit it as many times as they need
  • Students can practice forming sounds by watching the way their mouth moves
  • Video apps can provide another means of presenting in a classroom

  • PIcture Schedules and Timers
  • Assist in daily living, organization, and behavior
  • Use visual and text in schedules to promote language
  • Allows predictability and "chunking" of a day
  • Increase independence and decrease negative behaviors
