PRESENTATION OUTLINE

DEMOCRITUS

  • 400 BC
  • Proposed first atomic theory that all things are made of atoms
  • He claimed atoms were indivisible and indestructable
  • Contributed the first understanding of the atomic world

JOHN DALTON

  • 1803
  • Propoposed a theory that:
  • Each element is composed of atoms
  • All atoms of the same element are identical
  • Atoms combine in single whole number ratios to form molecules and compounds

JJ THOMSON

  • 1904
  • Discovered the electron
  • Concluded that electrons have a negative charges
  • Proposed the plum pudding model

ERNEST RUTHERFORD

  • 1910
  • Famous for the Gold foil experiment
  • Claimed the atom has a small dense region called the nucleus
  • Explained the nucleus has most of the mass in an atom
  • Came up with the nuclear atom model and discovered neutons

NIELS BOHR

  • 1913
  • Came up with the Bohr model of an atom
  • Proposed: electrons orbit the atom's nucleus
  • Close to nucleus=less energy. far from nucleus=higher energy
  • Electrons can jump shells based on their energy levels

SCHROEDINGER

  • 1926
  • Discovered an equation that:
  • Predicts the probability of finding an electron
  • Made quantum mechanical model
  • Model based to find electrons 90-95%
