JOHN DALTON

  • Was born color blind in eaglesfield England in 1766
  • Was principle of a Quaker school then a teacher at a college in Manchester
  • 1803- Dalton's Laws of Partial Pressures

JOHN DALTON CONT.

  • He made the first chart of atomic weights
  • He was first to say that atoms couldn't be created or destroyed.
  • He said elements can be distinguished by their weights
  • He also said that atoms combine in simple ratios.

J.J THOMSON

  • His father wanted him to be an engineer, but that didn't happen
  • He began studying cathode rays in 1894
  • He was respected and liked, and students came from all over to study with him
  • He found the electron and started first use of mass spectrometry.
  • He was married to one of his students, and his son even got a Nobel prize.

EARL RUTHERFORD

  • He received his early education in government schools when he was 18
  • He also researched under J.J Thomson
  • He invented a detector for electromagnetic waves
  • In 1898 he found alpha and beta rays in uranium radiation
  • He also found the nucleus of atoms in 1910

NEILS BOHR

  • His dad was a physiologist and helped him with his interest in physics
  • His mom was great in the field of education
  • 1913 he studied the structure of atoms, and made a picture of them.
  • In the 1930s he studied atomic nuclei transmutations and disintegrations

IRENE CURIE

  • Daughter of Pierre and Marie curry
  • Became doctor of science in 1925
  • 1938 she researched action of neutrons on heavy elements
  • Became professor at the faculty of science in Paris in 1937
  • She helped create the first french atomic pile in 1948

ROBERT MILKAN

  • Received a ph.d in 1895 because of research about polarization of light
  • Made the accurate determination of the charge of an electron
  • 1910 he demonstrated the atomic structure of electricity
  • Did stuff with hot-spark spectroscopy of the elements
  • And he extended the ultraviolet spectrum far past where it was
