PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Some threats to the Atlantic salmon are blocked access to spawning grounds, climate change, aquaculture, poor marine survival, and when the river ecosystem is not clean the population declines.
From a Forbes article I read said that habitat degradation caused by dams and culverts can decline the population.
Aquaculture is the farming of crustaceans, molluscs, aquatic plants, algae, and other organisms.
The last wild populations of Atlantic salmon are in eight rivers in Maine. They are also declining in Europe and Canada which is a concern globally.
Status: Atlantic salmon populations in single rivers range from thousands to nearly a quarter million. However some populations are small numberings in the low hundreds.
Appearance: when the salmon live in the rivers they grow a camouflage for spawning. The Atlantic salmon is a anadromous fish which means they spawn in the river and migrate to live in the ocean.
Diet: The salmons diet depends on their age. Young salmon eat insects and plankton. Adult salmon eat capeline that grow 8-10 inches long.
Where they live: They live in North America, Iceland, Greenland, Europe, and Russia.
Life span and reproduction: They live 2-3 years in the river and 1-2 years in the ocean. They can lay an average of 7,500 eggs.
In the end we as a nation need to come together and help bring back this endangered specie.
