THE PTOLEMAIC MODEL

  • First introduced by Claudius Ptolemy (AD 90- 168)
  • Ptolemy had the idea that the sun, star and the moon revolved around the Earth
  • This model stayed in place for hundreds of years

COPERNICAN

MODEL

THE COPERNICAN MODEL

  • First ntroduce by Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543)
  • Copernicus introduce the idea that the Earth revolved around the sun
  • The model wasn't perfectly correct but it was a new step in astronomy

WHAT DID HE DO ?

  • Eratosthenes the sun to measure the size of the round Earth
  • He measured the Earth to be 24,660 mile in circumference for his final number

  • Kepler determined that planets traveled around the sun in ellipses
  • Kepler also calculated three laws involving the motions of planets we still use today

  • Galileo discovered the four primary moons of Jupiter, and rings of Saturn
  • He also accredited for creating/inventing the telescope

  • Einstein suggested that the laws of physics are the same throughout the universe
  • Einstein also stated space and time are linked in an entity known as space-time

  • Hawking suggested that the universe has no boundary or border
  • Hawking proposed that, as the universe has a beginning, it will also likely end
