PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ARISTOTLE

  • Greek philosopher
  • 384- 322BCE
  • He created the theory the earth is the center of all things.

ARISTARCHUS

  • Created a heliocentric model of the solar system
  • 310-230 BCE

PTOLEMY

  • 100-170BCE
  • Created the "wheels on wheels stystem"
  • Believed the planets moved in small circles that in turn moved on larger circles

COPERNICUS

  • 1473-1543
  • Started the 1st step in the development if modern models of the solar system
  • Used his model based off of Ptolemys model

KEPLER

  • 1571-1630
  • Created the Kepler laws
  • 1- planetary orbits are eclipses with the sun at 1 focus
  • 2-planets move faster in their orbits when closer to the sun
  • 3- relates the distance of a planet to the sun to the time it takes to go once around its orbit

GEALILEO

  • Made improvements to the newly created telescope
  • 1564-1642
  • He used the telescope to view celestial objects
  • His observations showed that the earth was not the only object that could be orbited

NEWTON

  • 1643-1727
  • Built the 1st reflecting telescope
  • Developed theory of colour

HUBBLE

  • 1889-1953
  • American astronomer who established extragalactic astronomy
  • Hubble laws
  • Milky ways

GEOCENTRIC SOLAR SYSTEM MODEL

  • Earth is the center of the universe
  • Theory created by Ptolemy

HELIOCENTRIC MODEL

  • The model that earth and planets revolve around the sun
  • The sun is the center of the solar system
  • Theory created by Galileo
