WHAT IS ASTHMA?

  • Chronic lung disease that constricts and narrows the airways
  • No cure but very treatable
  • In the United States, more than 22 million people are known to have asthma. Nearly 6 million of these people are children.

CURRENT TREATMENT

Primary goal: maintain control over the patient's asthma, eliminate symptoms and limitations as well as reduce risk.

Alternatives to treating severe asthma:
clinical studies, new drugs, and a procedure called thermoplasty

BRONCHIAL THERMOPLASTY

  • Newly developed treatment
  • Reduces asthma attacks by reducing the amount of smooth muscle around the airways
  • Less muscle=less constriction of the airways=easier to breathe
  • Varied results
