ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES

HEARING IMPAIRED OR DEAF STUDENTS

HEARING AIDES

Hearing aides allow for students in class to participate more because they increase sound or make sound more clear in the students ear.

LIGHT OR VIBRATION SIGNALS

Students that are hearing impaired or are deaf benefit from this technology because it can be used to notify them of things, like due dates or updates on assignments. The technology works by flashing a light or vibrating. Like our phones work. But imagine this value to someone who can't hear their phone ring.

FM AMPLIFICATION SYSTEM

Student and teacher wear a system that makes the teachers voice louder and at a constant rate and the sound travels through a frequency directly to the student. This system uses radio frequencies and microphones to effectively communicate with the hearing impaired.

THESE ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES IN THE ART ROOM

Art is very visual. In the classroom though it relies heavily on being able to hear. Not only to hear me as an educator teach my students about art history, or techniques, but to also express emotion. Hearing aides and the FM amplification system allow my students to either hear me or the world around them which can impact their lives and their art. The vibration and flash signals allow me to gain the attention of my students and notify them of due dates for their pieces which promotes efficiency in them towards the class. The importance of hearing or responding in the art room is very crucial because so much of our understanding and emotion relies on hearing and communication.

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES AND NET'S-T

Assistive technologies and the NETs-T go hand in hand in a sense. The two benefit from each other and relate in more ways than one. The NETs-T focuses on what the teacher does in the classroom and often times how they utilize technology for the betterment of their students. Looking specifically at the second standard of ISTE it is "Design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments" which focuses on "teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes" in students. This standard reflects on the effect that assistive technologies have on students. If teachers are effectively using the tools providing, these tools, these assistive technologies should better the students in all areas. The standards and assistive technologies work together because both focus on teachers working to be the best they can be for their students. Teacher themselves are assistive and often provide the technologies the disabled students may need. The standards create the ideas of digital learners advancing through the teachers and so often digital learners are the students utilizing assistive technology.
