STATISTICS

  • 1% of the U.S. population ages 3-17 have an autism spectrum disorder
  • Prevalence is estimated 1 in 110 births
  • The cost of autism spectrum disorders over the lifespan is 3.2 million dollars per person

MYTHS

  • Children with AS will grow out of it eventually
  • People who have it don't make eye contact
  • AS is an emotional problem
  • People with Aspergers can't learn

DESCRIPTION

  • It is a developmental disorder that affects a person's ability to socialize and communicate effectively
  • The disorder is grouped by doctors with other conditions know as autism spectrum disorders
  • It is know as a mild case of autism
  • People with this disorder are commonly referred to as 'high functioning autistic
  • This means that they don't have as much of a difficulty as low functioning or more severe cases

SYMPTOMS

  • Having a hard time "reading" people or understanding humor
  • Moving clumsily with poor coordination
  • Speaking in a voice that is rigid or unusually fast
  • Showing an intense obsession with one or two specific subjects/topics
  • Unusual nonverbal-ness such as awkward body postures, and few facial expressions

HOW YOU GET IT

  • There isn't an exact cause for how people get it
  • There is no know way to treat it
  • Researches are searching for genetic causes
  • It usually tends to be passes down through family genes/heredity

TREATMENT/RECOVERY

  • As said before, there is no know treatment for this disorder
  • A person cannot just overcome from this disorder
  • A person who hasn't officially been diagnosed can recover from symptoms
  • But once a person is diagnosed, it is currently impossible to recover from it
