What is Aspartame?

  • Used in USA since1980s
  • Found in Equal and NutraSweet
  • Made of aspartic acid and phenylalanine

How do we consume Aspartame?

  • Broken down into phenylalanine, aspartic acid, and methanol
  • High amounts of methanol can be toxic
  • Phenylalanine and aspartic acid do not cause health problems usually

How much can we take?

  • FDA: 50 mg/kg of body weight
  • European Food Safety Authority (EFSA): 40 mg/kg of body weight
  • 3,750 mg per day for an adult weighing ~165 pounds
  • 12 ounce diet soda contains 192 mg
  • Tabletop sweetener contains about 35mg

Health Concerns

85% of major chewing gum brands contain Aspartame

Can aspartame cause cancer?

  • High doses might increase the risk of blood-related cancers (leukemias and lymphomas) in rats
  • Connection between sweetened soda and the risk of leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma in men, but not in women
