FOUNDERS

  • Margaret Naumburg 1947: Close to Freud thinking Art therapy as an access to in-conscious content
  • Edith Kramer 1958: She focuses the attention onto the creative process. Not only as an expression of conflicts in the inconscious, but also as a tool to for its resolution. So Art finally as a therapy

HOW EXACTLY DOES IT WORK?

ART THERAPY - WHERE IS THE BENEFIT

TO MAKE ART

  • the individual is involved in a cognitive effort for the imagination of the final product
  • Promotes the activation of the right side of the brain
  • Better communication mind-body
  • Symbolic Representation of our internal world

And it's this symbols representation the privileged channel to communicate the internal state not only to the psychologist but also to ourself while respecting the natural defence.
It can be done with a single person or in a group.

It was used with people affected by severe mental disorders like autism and psychotics where art therapy had good impact on communication

In Conclusion

In a society where we care about creativity less and less, in the sense of the relationship with your self and to find a way to connect to yourself, in a frenetic world where the excess of stimulation brings us far from our selves, I find important the therapy that art can give to re-establish the connection and promote self-acknowledgment
