SKILLS

Training requires a high level of self-awareness and that personal therapy is undertaken. Art Therapist must be able to relate to their patients/clients verbally and through their chosen art form. They are expected to be able to provide a secure environment within these sessions, as those referred, often express powerful emotions through the use of art.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

🔶Becoming an art therapist requires a Master’s Degree in Art Therapy, or in counseling with an emphasis in art therapy, from an accredited institution.
🔶Graduate schools require a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year institution.
🔶Some master’s programs also require completion of a certain number of hours of studio art and psychology courses.
🔶It is a good idea to major in a related field, such as psychology or art.
🔶Some schools offer Bachelor’s Degrees in Art Therapy, while others provide a minor in arts therapy. The Graduate Records Examination (GRE) is also required.

EMPLOYMENT OUTLOOK/JOB PROSPECTS

  • Art therapy as a career has been trending upward in the last 5 years. There are available jobs.
  • Some locations have a higher demand for art therapists and art therapy related positions.
  • You will have to do some investigation to check the career health of art therapy for your location.
  • Art therapists are employed by hospitals, palliative care centers, schools, in nursing homes,
  • and other community service agencies. These jobs don't just come up. Searching is required.

WHY DID I CHOOSE THIS?
I chose this topic because I didn't know too much about it. When I graduate I want to be in some type of therapy/psychology field, so this particularly intrigued me.

SKETCHBOOK ASSIGNMENT

  • You will use your sketchbook as a Wreck This Journal.
  • A wreck this journal is a journal that you do destructive or therapeutic things to.

YET TO BE CREATED

I don't really approve of my artwork but I enjoy my watercolor projects. These are two of my assignments. The one on the right was created Sep. 6, 2013. It was based on taking a piece of art and putting it in a completely different situation. The left was made on Oct. 11, 2013. It was inspired by "the perfect snow day. "

Untitled Slide

  • Outside of art, I am creative when I am bored, or seeking some change in my life.
  • The area I'm working to improve is mostly every part. I'm striving to become a great artist.
  • My favorite project has been my self portrait project. It gave me something to judge so I know where to improve.
  • My least favorite project was my clay monster. I felt that it made my craftsmanship skills look very poor.
  • I've improved overall with the general outlook at art. Taking an art class opened my eyes to broader ideas.
