ART THERAPIST

Art Therapy is the use of artistic methods to treat psychological disorders and enhance mental health.

Art therapists use a variety of art methods to help clients communicate, overcome stress, and explore different aspects of their own personalities

Requirements:
A master's degree in art therapy,or a master's degree in counseling or a related field with additional coursework in art therapy. Additional post-graduate supervised experience is also required.

You will likely have to take some variety of art classes and psychology classes, get a master’s degree, and achieve the appropriate requirements for your certification and licensure.

Employment Outlook:
Art therapy as a career has been trending upward in the last 5 years or so.
Unfortunately, it’s still not quite as popular as some other therapies, but most major metros should have several options for you to explore.

Art therapists work in private practice and/or in clinical, educational and rehabilitative settings such as:

• hospitals and clinics
• residential treatment centres
• long-term care facilities
• community centres
• prisons
• shelters
• schools
• mental health and social service agencies

Advancement:
There are opportunities to combine work with different client groups and organizations, as well as combining art therapy with other work roles such as community artist, teacher or professional artist.

If becoming a licensed and certified art therapist isn’t for you, then you can still broaden your horizon by utilizing art and creativity in other careers, such as speech therapy, counselling, psychotherapy, and many others.

Because art therapy is still considered a developing field, most countries (including Honduras) do not regulate its practice and application.

This occupation deals mainly with people. The relationship between the therapist and the client is of extreme importance.

I do think I have the aptitude for this occupation.
