HISTORY OF ARSENIC

  • It was originally mined by the Ancient Egyptians, Chinese and Greeks.
  • Although it was mined by these ancient people it wasn't actually identified until 1250.
  • The man credited for identifying the element mined as Arsentic was Albertus Magnus, a German alchemist.
  • Arsenic was known as "the king of poison."
  • Was used in Roman politics to get rid of "unwanted interferences."

HISTORY OF ARSENIC CONT.

  • The name Arsenic comes from the Latin word "arsenicum", the Greek word "arsenicon."
  • It is believed that Napoleon was killed by Arsenic.

PROPERTIES OF ARSENIC

  • It is in a solid state while kept in room temperature.
  • Its melting point is 1503 degrees F.
  • In the periodic table it is classified as a semi-conductor.
  • Its atomic weight is 74.92160.
  • Arsenics density is 5.776 grams per cubic inch.

USES OF ARSENIC

  • It is commonly used as a bug poison because of its chemical properties.
  • It is also used for bronzing and hardening shot.
  • It is used for preserving anything made of wood.
  • It is used in the manufacturing of bullets.
  • It is used to also preserve taxidermy.

WHERE AND HOW IT CAN BE FOUND

  • Can be found in parts of Asia, Europe, South America and Central America.
  • It is a solid mineral.
  • In its purest form it can sell for $320 per every 100 grams.
  • It is stable in dry air.
  • Will not melt unless under pressure at 814 degrees Celsius
