ARKANSAS EARTHQUAKES
December 16, 1811: What is now known as the New Madrid Earthquake was a large earthquake with an epicenter in northeast Arkansas that affected about 1 million square miles. Because of the sparse population in the region, damage and fatalities were largely avoided.

ARKANSAS FLOODS
Great Flood of 1927: The most destructive and costly flood in Arkansas history covered about 6,600 square miles and put 36 out of 75 of the state’s counties under water during the summer of 1927. More than 100 people died.
