In photography as in many forms of art, there are 3 different agents with various agendas.
1. Photographer/ Artist
2. Subject
3. Audience

A critical lens is a way of looking at a particular work of literature by focusing on style choices, plot devices, and character interactions and how they show a certain theme (the lens in question). It is a common literary analysis technique.

For social studies and history, we utilize critical lenses to understand a subject better from various points of view. This critical thinking allows up to bypass our own baises and gain a deeper understanding of that subject even if we are wrong.
