AP Human Geography

by Courtney Harrison
The lesson I have chosen to teach today is from AP Human Geography. My exam is on May 18, 2018.

today's topic:

Development (Unit 11  of APHG)
Today's topic is Development, which is the 11th unit we learned in APHG.

all nations are classified by development

all nations are classified by development; they are either considered developed countries, which are the ones in blue, or developing countries, the ones in grey.

developed

Australia, France, Italy, US, etc.
being a developed country, such as Australia, France, Italy, the US, and others in yellow on this map, means being more industrialized, technological, and economically advanced when compared to other countries around the world.

DEVELOPING - BRICS

developing countries, such as the brics countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), are countries that aren't as advanced when it comes to the economy, agriculture, and technology.

HDI

The HDi was created by the UN to measure the level of development and it calculates this every year since 1980.

3 to 4 sectors of development

PS: Activities that directly extract materials from Earth through agriculture
Mining, Fishing, and Forestry

SS: Manufacturers that process, transform, and assemble raw materials into useful products

TS: Provision of goods and services to people in exchange for payment
Retailing, banking, law, education, government

challenges in development

-> -> ->
Believe it or not, there are some challenges faced in developing a country.

rich vs. poor

...it never exactly ends fair...
the poor people tend to work hard to gain money (or in this case, fish) so that they may no longer be poor or in debt, but the way that the rich get rich is by stealing the hard work of the poor. this is the case when it comes to developed and developing nations as well.

failing tactic:

...doesn't turn out too great!
Self-sufficiency is a route that countries think will eventually lead them to independence. however, this tactic tends to fail due to a country's inability to produce all necessary items for survival right in their homeland. self-sufficiency cancels out trade, so this process leads them to failure.
